If you are learning Hindi then you’re probably going to want to be able to input devanagari characters on your computer. This lesson will teach you how to do that.

There are in fact several other ways to input Hindi, but I believe that this is the easiest. Sorry, but this is for Windows computers only and is based on my Vista operating system, but i’d presume that the set up for XP and Windows 7 is similar. Click on Control panel.
Click on Regional and Language options. Click on the Keyboards and Languages tab.
Click on Change keyboard. Click on Add, then Hindi (India). Select Keyboard and click Devanagari - INSCRIPT, you should then have this on your screen;.
Click OK, this will add Hindi to your keyboards so you should now see this;. Click on the Advance Key Settings tab and note what keys swap the language, the one highlighted in this picture below. This can easily be changed by clicking on Change Key Sequence. Click OK and then OK again.
The Hindi keyboard is now installed and ready to use on your computer but we’re not quite ready to type yet. Using the keys set in step 8 swap from English to Hindi Input. The Language bar, which can be found at the bottom right of the screen, on the task bar, will show you which language you are currently typing in.
Open the program that you want to type Hindi into, like Word or Safari for example, and now we are ready to type in Hindi! However you must first understand that the keyboard has completely changed and this takes some getting used to.
This picture will show you what each key now outputs; click on it to see an enlarged version. I recommend you save this to your computer for easy access. The keyboard is laid out with all the vowels on the left hand side and the consonants on the right, the consonants are ordered logically, you’ll see this once we have covered them in our lessons. Now find the Hindi letter you want to type and press that key. Each key usually has two symbols, to get the top symbol you simply hold down shift and press that key. For example if you wanted क you would simply type ‘k’, for ए type ’S’ (take note that it is capital s), type के you first want क then े so type k and then s, for आग type Ei and for हिन्दी you would type ufvdor. This may seem confusing at first, especially if you are a beginner to Hindi, but stick with it and it will make sense eventually. Practice typing out the Hindi words that you know over and over.
Your typing will be slow at first and you will have to keep checking with the keyboard layout picture to find the letters you want but eventually you will get the hang of things and it should become second nature.
